This Hourly History of Florence Nightingale was enlightening. I agree that I thought of her has a ministering angel who helped improve the conditions under which wounded British soldiers were held during the Crimean war. The e-book demonstrates that she was much more than that. She believed God called her to improve the conditions under which individuals were held in hospitals. At the time he came of age, the nursing profession such as it was was not considered appropriate for an upper-class woman. She helped improve the training and status of nursing plus she helped impact the field of public health. She had to fight with her family over a number of years before they consented for her to become a nurse and an administrator. Her battles with her family caused her to suffer depression at least once during her career. She seemed to enjoy working 20 hour days and working herself to exhaustion; she expected anyone who worked with her to be willing to do the same. To patients, she always had an excellent bedside manner, to others, she could be quite disagreeable. It’s almost incredible that after all the places she visited, all the suffering she observed, and all the writing she did to benefit the sick and poor that she lived to be 90 years old.
