An unforgettable spiritual autobiography about a search for meaning that begins alongside one of the great religious icons of our time and ends with a return to the secular world At seventeen, Mary Johnson saw Mother Teresa’s face on the cover of Time and experienced her calling. Eighteen months later, she entered a convent in the South Bronx to begin her religious training. Not without difficulty, this bright, independent-minded Texas teenager eventually adapted to the sisters’ austere life of poverty and devotion, and in time became close to Mother Teresa herself. Still, beneath the white and blue sari beat the heart of an ordinary young woman facing the struggles we all share—the desire for love and connection, meaning and identity. During her twenty years with the Missionaries of Charity, Sister Donata, as she was known, grappled with her faith, her sexuality, the politics of the order, and her complicated relationship with Mother Teresa. Eventually, she left the church to find her own path—one that led to love and herself.Provocative, profound, and emotionally charged, An Unquenchable Thirst presents a rare, privileged view of  Mother Teresa. At the same time, it is a unique and magnificent memoir of self-discovery.From the Hardcover edition.

I always read the reviews before I purchase a book. I've noticed with books about nuns who have left the convent ....there are often quite a few negative reviews. It's often apparent from the comments that many are written by Catholics who get angry when they think someone is saying anything negative about their church. I pay no mind to these types of reviews. Note that if you are Catholic you may not like this book as she does discuss some things they might not want to hear.As a young Texas woman fresh out of high school decides to join Missionary of Charity (MC)....the religious Order started by Mother Teresa. Unlike some of the ex-nun books I've read ....Mary doesn't appear to question her calling very much during the early years in the Order. She does voice some minor doubts...but she starts off pretty confident in her decision to join and devote her life to God. She gives a detailed account of the data to day life and her work in various places. She serves in the Bronx, D.C., and various places in Rome and Europe.Like many of these types of stories....over the years Mary struggles greatly with being surrounded by Superiors that often have nasty dispositions and seem more concerned with following the rules of the church than with showing the love of Christ to one another. With each place she is assigned, Mary goes into depth about the struggles she seeks to overcome in that particular season of her life. One area in which Mary struggles over and over again is sexually inappropriate relationships. She becomes involved with a couple of her fellow sisters and a priest in sinful sexual/physical relationships. She feels great guilt and struggles with internal conflicts regarding her desire for love and a physical connection vs the vows of chasity she took. I was quite shocked with some of the sexual sin that takes place in some convents. Perhaps I shouldn't have been surprised considering the harsh rules they are forced to live under. It's definitely eye opening to read about some of what goes on. It's also heartbreaking to read books like this and realize how many of these women long for some love, kindness, and compassion from those they live among. So many of these books have in common that sadly so many of the nuns are treated so poorly by their fellow nuns. Of course they're not all that way. Mary does share accounts of great Superior's that she had and other nuns who were kind.Mary served with the MC's for over 20 years. This book really gives an informative account of what life and work in an enclosed community was like for Mary. Over the 20 years you see her struggle in many areas of her life. She's not perfect and falls many times. She shares her failures with honesty and transparency. It's interesting to catch an inside glimpse into a life that's so closed off from society. It's fascinating to see the political dramas that unfold behind the scenes. You would think everything would be done with only God in mind.....but it appears from this memoir that many decisions are made from other considerations....such as personal ambitions and desires.Overall, this was an interesting read. It did sadden me at the end that Mary apparently walked away from her belief in God. One doesn't have to be a member of the Catholic church to be a good, faithful Christian and serve Christ. I've read other books about ex-nuns who developed an even deeper relationship with God and still sought to serve God on the outside. Mary appears to have become an atheist. As a Christian I find this tragic and hope she finds her way to knowing Jesus as her Lord and Savior. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about what life as a nun in the MC was like for one woman.
