I held off reading this book for others even though I’ve always liked Al. Big mistake. This is a great, enjoyable book. How does one become the premier announcer in sports? Turns out there is a lot of luck and that’s enough of the story right there. CA, to Hawaii, to Cincinnati, to California again to the big time. This is the story you don’t know and you read with a smile on your face it’s so much fun.But then we get in to the highlight and it’s a different story than many of us knew: calling the 1980 Miracle on Ice. Yes, I remember it and remember his famous words. That’s the first time I heard of him. But he covered so many Olympics, and of course Monday Night Football. If football is your thing then you have a lot of stories and history of the movement of the nightly football shows, how they developed and what/who made them great.Wait, not finished yet. He was close friends with OJ Simpson and has some unique stories there too. I remember watching TV the night of the Bronco chase and ABC breaks to a neighbor who gives his account of what is happening. Unfortunately he is not a neighbor and Al later recalls this episode on a Howard Stern show that was hilarious.What a great life and a great story. Al, thanks for making my sports more enjoyable. Job well done. And thanks for the book too.
